An excerpt from Folk On Tap, Spring 2006

Also in the line up for Wessex Folk Festival are Heelstone.  They are an up-and-coming band whose track record includes festivals and concerts, ceilidhs and pubs and who have recently produced their first (excellent, home grown) CD.  It has 12 tracks of traditional songs and tunes given in most cases , a new rhythm/sound/attitude that is essentially Heelstone.  They have developed a very distinct sound featuring Gareth’s gravel-edged vocals and driving rhythm guitar, Wen’s innovative fiddle and some really first-class bass guitar from Merv.  The best thing about this CD “elements” is that it reflects accurately what you hear when you go to a Heelstone gig - lots of freshness of interpretation with drive and good musicianship.  The group always create excitement when they play, whether in a pub or formal setting, so this will be a perfect buy-on-impulse-and-not-be-disappointed CD.  I enjoyed it and I can recommend it to all you Heelstone fans.  I must add that what also impressed me was the contribution of Marilyn Harris (Mum) whose painting on the front cover and her photographs, including an evocative silhouette of her progeny and a cracking picture of the instruments lying on a bed of bracken, really draw the eye.  They  are complimented by Gareth’s relaxed but informative comments (...thank you to all the people who have sung these songs and kept them alive for so many years...)  Among the songs they have recorded for posterity are ‘Over The Hills’, ‘The Rout Of The Blues’ and ‘The Morning Dew’ as well as the comic ‘I Wish They’d Do It Now’ and ‘Mairi’s Wedding’!  Have a listen!
